Next Muster: 1st August 2018
6:45am for 7:00am Start
Our August topic is SELF-AWARENESS!
These help managers to increase their self-awareness which in turns help them be more effective leaders, especially during uncertain times or through change strategies.
While it can seem a little ‘woo-woo’ or ‘touchy-feely’ to look into underlying values, assumptions and emotions, the benefits of doing so outweighs the hesitation. By understanding what self-awareness is and taking steps to increase self-awareness this ensures you become and even better leader.
In a sea of demands and expectations surrounded by direct reports, senior leadership and customers/clients or stakeholders, middle managers can feel the loneliest.
Isolated amidst a crowd: middle managers are expected to lead their direct reports, show results to senior leaders, do more with less, and get their own work done.
Middle managers have unique challenges, and those I work with often tell me:
✗ I’m spending too much time guiding, directing, coaching, refereeing others and feel as though there’s never enough time for your own work.
✗ I have to attend meeting after meeting.
✗ I have endless emails.
✗ I work long hours and often taking work home
✗ I really struggle to have the difficult and critical conversations
✗ I know I shouldn’t but I do avoid delegating because everyone is already busy enough.
✗ I wonder if I’m cut out for the role: “I feel as though I have to have all the answers, I’m their manager and they look to me to guide them.”
✗ I often feel lonely and isolated.
As companies follow trend and shift to more flat structures, the middle manager has been forgotten. Spending is on frontline staff, customer service and executive leadership development while development for middle managers tends to be an after-thought. The Middle Manager Muster aims to bridge isolation and development so that middle managers become productive – happy – leaders.
“The forum is a great idea as I can’t say I’ve seen same on offer elsewhere. As a middle manager, one often has that ‘sandwiched’ feeling of expectation from above and a necessity to keep the ball rolling below. Enjoyed the morning. SD – aviation industry.
“Most businesses spend less on training their managers than they do on the office furniture and PC they give them to work with.” Management Today
“This is exactly what I would have wanted when I was a manager: connection; a safe space to share ideas and ask those questions where I felt I couldn’t ask anywhere else; the networking and peer support.”
“I realised that networking is one of the most valuable uses of my time in terms of return—and not just in monetary terms.” – Business Insider Australia

“I strongly recommend Sally Foley-Lewis as a Management Trainer and Coach for you and the supervisors and managers of your organisation. She combines top credentials, a keen sense of urgency, sharp facilitation skills and a very personable and engaging communication style to deliver recommendations and programs that improve staff performance. I continue to rely on Sally for her management wisdom – because it works!” – Robin Dickinson, Sydney
“Sally Foley-Lewis was my coach over a seven month period during 2009 – 2010. I found her to be completely professional as she motivated, encouraged and supported me. Sally developed an accurate understanding of my situation through her structured approach and skilful listening. She carefully and sensitively pushed me to think through how I could get past any barriers that were holding me back so that I determined what the best path was for me, and therefore had full ownership of making it happen. She was also there as a sounding board when I needed to brainstorm ideas for some of my strategies and helped me to realise that there were more perspectives to consider for some of the issues. Most of our coaching was done over Skype. This was never an obstacle between us as Sally ensured that she provided constant feedback. I knew she was always listening and fully attentive to our sessions. There was never a time I wished we were sitting face-to-face, as I sincerely felt we were in the same room together at all times, both completely immersed in my coaching sessions. I feel that my coaching sessions have provided clarity for my personal and professional life. Sally handled the emotions that arose with care but didn’t allow them to hinder our progress, gently guiding me through them so I achieved even more from the experience. I have accomplished some really important goals for myself and have found an inner peace on a personal front that will hold me in good stead for any future hurdles that I may come across. I thank Sally sincerely for her coaching and highly recommend her to anyone who would like to be inspired to achieve more in their life.” Yours sincerely, – Joanna, Perth
